He is criminaly overrated!
His brother Heinrich was by far the superior writer. He captured the german soul not once but twice! In Professor Unrat and in Der Untertan. Both fantastic reads! But by far not his magnus opus! That would be his novels about Henry Quatre. Maybe the most underread and underrated book of western literature.

What has Thomas? Buddenbrooks? Yes very nice... but compared to Der Untertan very mid.
Magic Mountain? Oh you mean that book that was literally a fake of Hamsuns Last Chapter?!

Fuck Thomas Mann and praise Heinrich Mann!

Some mind-blowing parts in that one, like when Adrian meets the devil, or when Mann describes Adrian's trip to the bottom of the ocean on a submersible and somehow elegantly ends up describing the vastness of our galaxy, or the absolutely heart-braking and soul-crushing description of little Nepo's death

Hesse was really handy for me, the Kaestner reccomendation is on song. I also think Lenz (for the stories) is accessible, because he's all about physical description of the world, with little to no abstraction.
