THE BOUTIQUE
by Trouserpress

After Mr Asquith stopped being Prime Minister of Great Britain, he set up a little problem-solving and stationary boutique in Hammersmith. It was a green boutique, rather than the traditional orange, but nobody criticised him for his injudicious colour choice. He was, after all, an ex-Prime Minister.
__________________________________________________________________

The first person to visit Asquith’s boutique was a tall man who was looking after his friend’s serpent. The tubular beast had attached itself to the unfortunate man’s nose and seemed in no mood to let go in the foreseeable future. “Ow” said the tall man, and furthermore, “Can you help me?”

“Aye” replied Asquith. “What that feller wants is some cheese. Grill some wensleydale under a shrub and ‘e’ll be slippin’ off in no time.”

The tall man thanked Asquith for his advice, bought a pencil, and hurried off in search of some wensleydale cheese to grill.
__________________________________________________________________

The second person to visit Asquith’s boutique was a taller man (than the previous tall man), who was a logsmith by trade. Business had been slow, as demand for logs was waning. “Arse” said the man, and furthermore, “Can you help me?”

“Aye” replied Asquith. “What you’m be needing is a dancin’ chair to go outside yer shop and attract yer customer’s eye. Rent one for the chemists and you’ll be sellin’ logs again in no time.”

The taller man thanked Asquith for his advice, bought a pencil-sharpener, and hurried off in search of the chemists.
__________________________________________________________________

The third person to visit Asquith’s boutique was an even taller man (than the previous two tall men) whose wife no longer wished to play snap with him. She attributed this change of heart to leukaemia, but the man felt sure there was an underlying cause. “Bunting” said the man, and furthermore, “Can you help me?”

“Aye” replied Asquith. “What you’m oughta do is sing ‘er a song – O Merry Beaked Device, p’raps, or possible Dear Sporadic Maiden. Tickle ‘er ears with a joyous ditty an’ she’ll be slappin’ them cards down again in no time.”

The even taller man thanked Asquith for his advice, bought a pencil-sharpener display cabinet, and hurried off in search of his larynx.

Four hours later, the three men returned. Their eyes were stern and their fingers sterner. They were not satisfied with Mr Asquith’s advice.

“How dare you!” said the first man.

“What rot!” declared the second.

“Bunting!” growled the third.

“What seems to be the problem, sirs?” asked Asquith meekly.

“The serpent remains firmly attached! It doesn’t like cheese at all!” said the first man.

“I’ve not sold any more logs – not one! Furthermore, the dancing chair raped me!” declared the second.

“My wife wants a divorce! She thinks O Merry Beaked Device is an ugly song!” growled the third.

“Ooh ‘eck” said Asquith. The men tore off strips of wood from the frame of his green boutique. They clubbed him to death with them and set the stall ablaze.

The council cleared up the mess on Thursday and are considering putting some bins there now.
