What Dostoevsky do I start with?

>> No.22578140

Start with War & Peace instead since it's the greatest novel ever written.

>> No.22578142

>>22578140
I heard it's a very hard read though
I've only read like 2 books in my life.

>> No.22578151

>>22578137
do C&P, The Idiot, The Double, The Gambler, A Gentle Creature, Notes from Underground, Dream of a Ridiculous Man, White Nights, Demons, TBK.

>> No.22578155

>>22578151
oh, and put The Adolescent after notes from underground.

Did you not go to school? Or did you sparknotes everything?
The only hard part of War & Peace for me was keeping track of all the characters. But there are only a few you really need to keep track of, pic related.

>> No.22578158

Poor Folk

>> No.22578163

>>22578156
I have a photographic memory so I would just Sparknotes stuff yeah. I got the top grades in my English/History exams despite never reading into the content.

>> No.22578166

>>22578137
Definitely Notes from the Underground, it's one of his earlier books, it's great and it's short. Just don't get filtered by the first part.

>> No.22578172

>keeping track of all the characters
why do am*ricans struggle so much with russian names and characters? i have literally no issue with it.

>> No.22578308

>>22578172
patronymic surnames were a bit confusing to me at first, especially when several characters shares them despite not being related

>> No.22578397

>>22578137
I'd say Crime and Punishment is a solid entrance to Dostoevsky. Great novel, not too long, memorable characters. It's *the* Dostoevsky that people think of.

>> No.22578403

>>22578172
Some of the names have completely foreign pronunciations for most Americans. What is that hard to get?

>> No.22578405

>>22578403
they're anglicized to be easy.
i speak a romance language and have no issue at all, and the translators here are nice enough to leave the romanization as-is instead of how yours do it.

>> No.22578507

>>22578137
Crime and Punishment is a good place to start. Many of his books share common themes so reading C&P first will help you wrap your head around his masterpiece The Brothers Karamazov easier in my opinion.

>> No.22578515

>>22578137
Notes from underground obviously

This whole ‘where do I start’ shit is a meme and I’ve only ever heard people speak about art like that here. If you read regularly you should start with whatever book you like. Why someone would willingly waste hours reading books that preceded the book they actually want to read is beyond me
> Tldr: C&P, it’s probably his most famous book and it isn’t long

It makes some sense for philosophers whose works build on top of each other

Fair burn philosophy isn’t art

>> No.22578675

why are his books so long?

its like 800 pages long retard

My copy has about 400. Did you buy the one with photos in them that help explain the plot for you?

>> No.22578888

Notes From Underground for sure. Learn to love him with a short book that will help you not be filtered or overwhelmed by the longer ones.

I started with The Brothers Karamazov and it’s the greatest book I’ve ever read. Can’t decide if I’m doing the idiot or C&P next

>> No.22578903

>>22578308
classic modesty lol.

>> No.22578972

I started with the Gambler, reading Crime & Punishment rn, the Brothers Karamazov is a tad long but very very good, but I maybe wouldn't start with it right off the bat

>> No.22579973

Fyodor is probably the best Dostoyevsky to start with

I would say don't start.

Anna K is better
W&P is #2 though

You should start with fyodor mikhailovich

for me it's Venom Fyodor

World and Peace isn't hard to read, it is just long. Read Tolstoy after you finish Dostoevsky.

>> No.22581359

>>22578166

First part is just a worthless rant.

It's best to just skip the first part and go directly to the story of the falling sleet or whatever.
