I think that all the extended unexplained lore like the deep ones or anything else like that are just there to l give his world some depth. Some of it could be that Martin believes that things like the deep ones exist. And others could be ideas Martin has where the deep ones do not exist and it’s just an interesting myth to make the iron born more interesting. Essos could be interesting if it really were this weird place where a bunch of lovecraftian monsters used to roam. But when I read the books it seems like it’s just a way Martin gives essos culture so that they are not just bland cities. But for me essos is very random and quirky and I am completely uninterested in it

a lot of that isn't supposed to be real in-universe, it's just what the westerosi maesters believe about these places, places they barely even know exist at all. the inverse also happens, like in yi ti they think the lannisters are literal lions made of gold or something.
but that's the boring answer, and in reality, a decent amount of this is also actually supposed to be real. in westeros, there are dragons and frost demons, a 700 foot tall 300 mile wide wall of enchanted ice, and people have been resurrected from the dead. why couldn't some lovecraftian be real in essos?

That would have been the Asshai’i, from further east, when they interacted with Longstrider.

— ‘Lomas Longstrider reports that, even in far Asshai-by-the-Shadow, there were merchants who asked him if it was true that the "Lion Lord" lived in a palace of solid gold and that crofters collected a wealth of gold simply by plowing their fields.’

Meanwhile…further up north…is a literal Wall of ice.

I’m also going to point out that the black stone and elements of deep sea horrors aren’t exclusive to Essos, or any continent for that matter.

Like, it’s pretty clear there were civilizations, maybe even empires, of fishy peoples. They made contact all over the coasts of the world. Their descendants are still around.

I really have no interest in reading these books but I love poking around the lore of the world just to find the random weird shit in it. I've spent hours browsing through the ASOIAF Wiki just to read the lore articles. It's far and away the best thing about this story, better than the actual plot that's for sure.

I love how the Africa stand-in continent has dinosaurs and giant apes.

Lovecraftian horror is better alluded to than explained so even if Martin intends it to be part of the lore and not just cheeky references it won’t be spelled out. His books seldom spell anything out and that drives engagement like crazy. Speculation is what’s kept them with a fandom.

I would take this further to say there won’t be many definitive answers about anything in the books (assuming they even materialize, piss be upon him). The show made it explicit that the walkers were created by the children, but didn’t elaborate. They accomplish nothing and are punked by Arya too so I expect the narrative won’t do that. However it illustrates that an “answer” you’re given doesn’t really explain much. (Why did this bioweapon turn on them? What controls it, what are its goals? Etc)
Compare it with the labyrinthine theories about Valyrians DNA editing themselves with dragons to control them, the glass candles being ancient technology and so on. How much of this will be stated outright? Nada.

But honestly it’s Gurms fault. Both in that he deliberately writes in an indirect style hinting at a lot of plot that isn’t spelled out. He baits his own readers into speculating about what is happening, and how things will turn out.
He then produces no fucking books. It wouldn’t be so bad if they had a few years to build hype for whatever retard theories and then the book drops and dispels or confirms them. But he’s had no material for a fucking decade. The only people who care are obsessives left with nothing to do but theorize and hope. Gurms also drops more “lore” (again vague enough to never really confirm jack shit unambiguously) to churn the theorizing even more.

He hasn’t been in a coma. He keeps saying he’s writing. He’s insisted it’s coming out constantly shifting the deadline. He keeps promoting the world with new shows, the lore books, it’s a perpetual cocktease about it all coming to fruition.
His own hype train has kept the fans occupied as there’s fucking nothing to read. So they theorize and go insane trying to distill copium about how good it’s gonna be, how it all pays off.
That’s probably half the reason he can’t write it. He can’t come up with anything to match the hype. His best reveals have been exposed. Expect half the plot threads to just be dropped because his gardening storytelling can’t make things work.
>>23126213
> Wasn't the whole point of Quentin's act, about the hero journey failing?
Right, that’s what I think. The lorefreaks can’t stand the thought that he wasted a chapter just to say “haha you thought” (it’s frankly stupid and excessive given that he’s drummed the same point home however many times). They need it to mean more, tie into some grand reveal.

If he just finished the fucking books the bar for them would have been lower. If he finished Winds before the show ended he would’t have to compete with having shown his hand (to whatever extent they got and followed his “vision”).

The entire Martell story is GRRM basically reiterating all the series' themes in the most blatant way possible. Every time the Martells enact some new scheme for revenge one of their loved ones dies. Every. Single. Time. But they are so petty and stupid that they keep trying.
Quentyn is a reiteration of this. Doran uses his son as a tool in his revenge quest and what a surprise, Quentyn dies horribly. GRRM, being an anti-war hippie obsessed with Vietnam, also probably wrote this in as an analogy for older generations sending their children to their deaths in foreign wars on the other side of the world.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ellaria murders Doran and coups Dorne like in the show. It will happen after Arianne and the older sand snakes that Doran sent to King's Landing for yet another revenge plot inevitably die pointlessly. The difference is that Ellaria will actually have a sensible motive for the coup, to end the cycle of revenge that killed her lover and his family members.
What irritates me about Preston is that he understands very well that a major theme of the story is REVENGE BAD and that GRRM is an anti-war hippie. Yet somehow he has done extreme mental gymnastics to convince himself and others that the retards in the story most obsessed with revenge will magically win out in the end.

Big Walder is alive and seems to be the only commander of the Frey forces alive in the battle against Stannis. The likely outcome is that Stannis will capture Big Walder and could use him as a convenient puppet.

Isn't he like ten? Ser Aenys Frey died when his horse fell into one of the pits the Umbers dug. Ser Hosteen ("Ser Stupid") is now commanding the Freys.

>> No.23146213

Yeah they are pretty good.

Very different from the regular ASOIAF books in the sense that they try to be a more traditional knight story, but they are short and entertaining.

If you like the lore they also reveal some interesting things there.
