OP here

i love the way you are just thrown into this mans struggle. throughout the book you are just as lost as K is. The dialogue in between characters is also amazing.
i found the book pretty funny tbh

Poster of this, I actually think Kafka is okay but that cover is stupid as fuck and makes it look like a 20something "ironic" faggot would pick up to look smart because he heard the name mentioned as important.

>> No.650813

>>650805
just googled the cover and it was the first thing that came up.
my copy is actually a picture of a castle on top of a mountain,
i also didnt randomly pick this up.
my mom recommended it to me.

Kafka has been dead for 86 years and had nothing to do with that cover.

>> No.650825

kafka has influenced some of todays greatest authors
this man is a genius

Like I said, my problem4 isn't with Kafka or his writings, it's with that shitty cover and the people it's marketed towards.

its a pretty hard read, even if those fags picked this up it would just end up catching dust

Kafka really is the greatest 20th century writer, but yeah he's been the victim of his own greatness.

Well how good is kafka really? he's an incredible writer, but so much of it goes towards simply being trapped, incapacitated, crushed, etc. incapable of action.

In a way, I feel like his role in the canon is mostly explained by his historical role -- he's symbolic of Jewish culture immediately pre-Holocaust, and deeply paranoid of the systems that led to the nazi party.

One of my favorite stories I recently read by him was The Burrow... that was awesome and it made me feel incredible. Kafka didn't live long enough to achieve quite what he probably could have. But his small body of work the way it is represents one of the most essential voices in our literary culture... so maybe I've just contradicted myself.

the holocaust was really close to kafka. he mercifully didn't see it dying at fortysomething from tuberculosis. all 3 of his sisters died in concentration camps.

I think "The Hunger Artist" is one of my favorite Kafka stories...I think he was an amazing writer and Gabriel Garcia Marquez (or was it Borges? I forget) once said that he didn't know that it was possible to write the way he wanted to until he read Kafka.

>> No.652363

It seems it's cool to hate Kafka more and more every day. Bizarre really.

Kafka's a great writer but the Castle IS a half-finished mess.

>> No.652399

i found the castle immensely frustrating, the way that every time i thought i knew where it was going it just went off on a tangent and got mired down in something even more annoying. it was such a slog to get through and then it doesn't even end
and then i realised that that's the point

I fucking love Kafka but he's definitely rolling in his grave over that awful cover.

Fucking terrible.

>> No.656668

It was a beautiful analogy that did an amazing job of staying just slightly fantastical. Much better than the Metamorphisis in my opinion for this reason. Also, as the guy said earlier that cover is shite.
