10828059 No.10828059 [Reply] [Original]

The series needs to ditch strafing and go back the puzzle-like, more strategic combat of the original.

>shitty combat is now called strategic combat
I was wondering where all the political correctness bullshit is going to lead to

Ratchet 1's combat is more about approach and strategy than reaction and execution.

Ratchet 1 also had the best writing, plot, character development, world design and aesthetic, level design and multiple paths, balance, and challenge.

I've only played the first game, do the later games have more or less of the shitty unfun gimmick parts like the turrets or the spaceship fights? I fucking hated that.

>> No.10828695

Ratchet 1 has enemies that feel designed for the engines of the rest of the series, but you're stuck with the Ratchet 1 engine, so you're left flailing around trying to get enemies that you aren't properly equipped to deal with.

>> No.10828948

Ratchet 1's combat wasn't anything remarkable but it was solid. 2 was an improvement but strafing is just too fucking useful. Every Ratchet game since then has just been strafing and flipping all over the place. Its boring, I'll take the shittier combat any day.

you're never forced to strafe and flip if it makes you upset

I'm in two minds about this.
The movement introduced in 2 onwards is less frustrating and more controllable, but at the same time makes Ratchet feel too light. Like, there's no heft or weight to him at all, just flipping around like crazy like a bag caught in the wind.
It feels a bit hollow

you can keep strafing and the same fluid movement, just make projectiles faster and more punishing so you can't circle strafe every enemy. also, some enemies should have special types of armor to be more resistant to explosives, while others more resistant to energy beams, etc. Not exactly an original concept, but it would really help with the weapon balance. you can easily have fluid combat that's also strategic.

and just to mix things up even more, program some enemies to occasionally lead their shots at their random. also slightly vary the lead parameter between enemy types.

Do people really look for this kind of shit in a shooty platformer?

not at all, but it's a nice bonus.

Depends on if it's a platformer or an adventure game. In something like Mario or DKC, I don't really care, but Ratchet and Clank is more of an adventure game and has a big focus on the characters and story.

Was strafing not introduced until Going Commando? I've barely played the original but I've logged many hours in GC and Up Your Arsenal.

There's a very limited kind of strafing in the original, usable with the thruster pack.

That's not even remotely true and you are a dumbass.
