If you’re not buffmaxing, you’re low effort. Simple as. If you see someone here with a terrible $12 Radioshack mic, you’re probably not going to sit through their streams or take them seriously until they get a better mic. Same goes for their vtuber models. Vtubing is a visual medium, people want to watch nice looking models. Thing is, a lot of people are stuck in /asp/ exactly because they’re poorfags and third worlders, so people have settled on this cope that png models are acceptable. They are not. They will bottleneck your potential audience. All the time and effort you spend networking and streaming is time you could be spending working an extra job so you can get a live2d model faster.

Starting with a debut stream is very much a corpo thing. Debut stream is you presenting yourself to an audience. The corpo funnels an audience to you, you use the debut stream to pitch yourself to it. That's the corpo way of bypassing the 2view gutters.

For indies with no existing audience, there's very little reason to invest any time or effort into a debut stream. It's something of a "cargo cult" thing to do. If you want to, you can do it later, when you actually have a network that will support your debut, and a sizeable audience. You can tie it to some nice milestone, like reaching a certain subscriber count, getting a proper model, going full time or celebrating an anniversary.

Some indies already are content creators with an established audience, trying to pivot to vtubing. For those, having a debut stream makes some sense. If that's your situation - go for it! But most /asp/ies here start with 0views and a dream.

Sure, professional gear and a good model are buffs. A really shitty model and a scuffed setup are debuffs. But buffs and debuffs are all they are. No matter the buffs you stack, for an indie who's just starting out, the growth is going to be hella slow. And buffmaxxing ain't cheap.

To any indie starting out, I recommend investing very little before you start putting out content. You definitely don't want to sink 10k into getting everything in order, only to realize that you can't hold a schedule, face an anxiety meltdown over the "go live" button every day, don't have it in you to be more entertaining than watching paint dry, or just flat out don't enjoy streaming. Some realize all too late that they liked the *idea of being a vtuber* - and don't like *actually being a vtuber* at all. Many such cases.

Once you got the ball rolling on the content and start getting at least some income, you can start thinking about buffing yourself all the way up. Before that, go for the more accessible buffs - like improving your content. Almost any vtuber starting out has a lot of work to do in that department.

My opinion is in the middle. Having solid audio (no need to go XLR, perfectly acceptable USB mics like Rode's ones can be found for $50-150) and good network setup is a must. A good model is a buff but not an absolute prerequisite like those. PNG or bare-bones L2D is fine - people will mostly listen to the voice and focus on the game screen (or listen in the background), unless it's a zatsudan where the model is in the center. Most people only stream games anyway.
Shitty audio and network breaks however just make it painful to listen to the stream no matter how legitimately fun the person is. I've quit more streams due to the those issues than anything else. Properly setting up the relative volume of the game and your voice is also vital. And really, I beg everyone, check your audio _before_ you start the stream, record a 5-second clip in OBS and play it back so you can adjust the settings.

It really shocks me how few vtubers capitalize on weekend streaming and how many do weekday streams, because I feel like the majority of non-NEET vtuber viewers are wageslaving all week and then just sit at home on the weekend looking for something to watch(this is my case at least). I basically never have enough streams or even vods to last the weekend, and on weekdays I only have time after work to watch an episode or two of anime while I cook and eat dinner, then go to bed, so I'm definitely not watching streams. It makes me think that most vtubers today are normies because they're always doing irl shit on the weekend instead of streaming. Its a mixed bag but you can definitely feel a difference in weekday and weekend viewership both in volume and individual attendance. I've had some tell me during the week they were watching on their breaks at work or miss the first half of stream before they get home.

I also don't usually do the same content on weekends so I should probably experiment more with that.

What would y’all consider a good amount of streaming consistency when first starting out? For now I’ve decided to stick with at least 3 streams a week, with two of those streams being long streams on Friday and Saturday since no work the next day = no bed time. I am of the opinion that anything a vtuber (or any streamer really) does is G/BFE, because you don't have any control over what someone sees as ideal in a partner. Playing a character is a gimmick at the end of the day. If it is a good enough one to catapult you into the 20+ ccv level great, if not it's going to put up a barrier from you creating a bond with your 1 view that you are going to need to gain actual regulars at that level of viewership.
