It's not as bad as people say, but it's not as good as Gothic 1 or 2. You can have a lot of fun with it, but the real issue is that it's unbelievably broken and buggy. I tried replaying it probably 10 years ago and even after a bunch of fan patches i still encountered game breaking bugs and crashes constantly.
